What is the best protein powder? A Taste Test

Protein powder – the easiest, most convenient way to stock up on protein after a workout.

I’ve been trying out a handful of different pure whey protein powder flavours courtesy of BulkPowdersDK, specifically Chocolate, Banana, Lemon Meringue and Toffee Popcorn. Over a period of time, I tried all of them mixed with about 200 mL milk. You can also mix them with water, but in my experience milk taste so much better.

If you want something even more special, you can also add it to a smoothie, like I did with this strawberry protein smoothie.

And now it’s time to answer the important question:

Which is the yummiest flavour?

You never go wrong with chocolate. I’ve always had a preference for the chocolate flavour, and this is the best one I’ve ever tried. It doesn’t taste even slightly artificial, just creamy delicious.

Do you know what my favourite Italian ice cream flavour is?

You know what this taste like?

That banana ice cream.

It’s not a super intense banana flavour but just enough to make it super delicious.

Lemon meringue

Now this one was was interesting. Mainly because I had no idea what meringue meant – so I thought it was going to be very bitter. I don’t know why anyone would want lemon flavoured protein powder, but people like all kinds of crazy things.

Turns out meringues are like small cakes  – kyskager (kiss cakes) in danish. And the taste is very nice, although it’s still a little weird to drink.

Toffee Popcorn

I genuinely thought I was going to hate this flavour.

The thought of toffee popcorn brought back memories from a trip to Germany with my family when I was a kid. My dad was alone at a Bundesliga football game with 3 kids who he knew loved popcorn – so he thought it would be a great idea to get popcorn for them. Turns out, Germans like to put sweet stuff on their popcorn?? It was so awful!

Later I’ve learned that maybe we’re just weird for only liking neutral/salty popcorn – but it’s the only kind that taste nice.

But let’s get back to the protein powder – after all, we’re not here to refresh my traumatising childhood memories. Because this thing doesn’t taste like popcorn at all – maybe that’s because there’s actually not a lot of taste in popcorn when you take away the texture and the crunchiness (is that a word?. I just made it a word). It’s just yummy toffee-ness, and I’m a fan!

If I had to pick a favourite among all these, I’d pick the toffee. It’s super good, and I don’t see myself getting tired of it anytime soon!

I am super intrigued by the one that tastes like banana ice cream! I usually stick to chocolate myself, but I wonder if mixing the banana and chocolate together might be extra delicious.

Chocolate is always a good choice! I’m thinking the mix is either going to be absolutely amazing or completely terrible – but I guess you’ll have to try to know it!

I think the toffee popcorn was delicious! But not everybody likes protein powder – so maybe you’re better off hiding it in smoothies or pancakes? x

  2. Thanks so much for the input. I’m starting to kick up my workout regime (well trying to with all of the holidays coming up) and I’m trying to find a protein powder that I’ll like. I really hate how some of them over power the flavor of the fruits I mix in with my smoothies. I’ll try these out and hopefully that won’t be the case! I’m really craving that chocolate protein powder!

Glad you liked the post! Another thing to do, if you like to use protein powder in smoothies is to go for vanilla (and some even have flavourless powder) – that way it won’t be as overpowering 🙂
